Ellington Whippets are State Champs
The Ellington Whippets (29-1) showed up and showed out in the Class 2 State Championship.
The Whippets got things started in the top of the 1st when Will Copeland led off with a double, then a single by Nolan Heady followed by walks to Kaleb Richards and Cameron Brewer scoring 1 run.
They would add 4 more runs in the 5th with singles by Copeland and Heady followed by a 2 rbi single by Richards. Then Dillon Buckner singled to drive in 2 more runs to push the lead to 5-0.
In the 6th inning, the Whippets would tack on 3 more runs when Copeland would reach on an error by the 3rd baseman and score on a double by Richards. Brewer and D. Buckner both showed patience at the plate, drawing a walk and setting up the RBI opportunity for Garret Morris, who wouldn’t disappoint. Morris drove the ball to left field, the left fielder miss played the ball allowing Richards and Tyler Hackworth to score, making it 8-0.
The Whippets would add another run in the 7th when Tucker Dement led off with a hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and was moved to third with a sac fly by Copeland. Dement would then score on another wild pitch making it 9-0.
That would prove to be enough for Senior Kaleb Richards on the mound. Richards pitched a complete game allowing 4 hits and striking out 7 on only 82 pitches.
