Ellington - Onto the State Quarterfinals with a Dramatic Win!
It was a long drive to Portageville, MO tonight for the Ellington Whippets as they hoped to pull out a sectional win against the home town Bulldogs. The drive turned out to be well worth it. The Whippets executed on their very last strike to pull off a dramatic win from behind with a final score of 5-4. The starting pitcher for Ellington was Kaleb Richards who, during the first inning, was able to hold off Portageville from the mound. However, the Bulldogs put up 4 runs in the 2nd inning making the score 4-1. From there on, the Portageville Bulldogs would not score again. Richards would put zeroes up for the next couple of innings striking out 7 Bulldogs. Cameron Brewer came in to close for the Whippets and picked up the win in relief. In the bottom of the 7th, the Whippets were up to bat with 2 outs, 2 men on, and 2 strikes. A ground-ball up the middle that the Bulldogs' shortstop could not handle would bring in tying and winning runs to send the Whippets into the quarterfinals.
The Ellington Whippets at 26-1 will host the quarterfinal game on Wednesday, May 22nd at 4:30 pm. against the Chaffee Red Devils at 22-5.
All of us at Big 3 Athletics would like to wish the last surviving baseball team in our conferences good luck in their quarterfinal game!
